Give Me Back My Hometown...

I thought it'd be fun to do a little post about growing up in my hometown in Georgia, Alpharetta. I know a lot of the fellow bloggers I follow are from towns not too far, so some of this might be familiar!

When I first moved there, there was like nothing. I know it's all developed now but back in 1990, there was nothing there. Just lots of hills and some barns and silos. My house was one of the first in the subdivision and next door to our development was a large red barn. At night in the summer, our driveway would be covered with frogs. I could hear them from upstairs in my room and they really bothered my mom. As the construction continued, the frogs later disappeared when their homes were gone.

The closest theatre, Walmart, etc was in Roswell so there wasn't a lot to do if mom wasn't feeling up to driving. I don't really ever remember going out to eat much or really going out a lot. Outings were usually to go get groceries or when it was the weekend and we were looking for things to do.

My dad liked to drive around randomly and I think that's where I get that habit. We only went downtown when there was company or we had to go to the airport. Back then, Underground Atlanta was fun. There was a Cafe Du Monde. Our only other really big outings in Atlanta were during the 1996 Centennial Olympics (we have bricks in the park) and the day they demolished Fulton County Stadium.

We had a large backyard filled with trees and all kinds of animals. We had a motion detector so it was always kind of fun to see what was wandering out there. We've seen everything from armadillos to possums, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and the neighbor's dog. Behind our house was a small lake that most of us kids didn't go to because there was a rumor someone died in it.

I played in the backyard when the weather was nice which resulted in most of my white T-shirts being covered in red dirt. A few friends and I attempted to make a fort on the slope over our driveway but the ground was too slippery and the cardboard boxes were not working out as we had hoped.

My pets were the fire ants who lived in the huge mound behind the house. This thing was about the size of a loveseat. It was pretty common to find lizards in the house and sometimes I would keep the prettier ones and carry them around in my pocket. Our biggest problem was usually squirrels crawling into our chimney and getting stuck. I always thought one would find its way into the house.

North Point Mall hadn't been built yet and that whole area was trees. Our farmer's market (which has since become a Whole Foods) was one of our favorite places to go and check out the "exotic" foods. One of my fave places to eat was called Dinner Deck and it was off GA-400 towards Dawsonville. They had really great hush puppies and instead of dessert, there was a sherbet bar. When I got older and my dad had ham radio meetings, we would go to Ryan's or Quincy's. That was a "big outing" for me, I just loved the rolls.

When I was in kindergarten, after a school field trip I saw a huge cat in the big hill behind my school. When I mentioned it to my teacher, she assumed I was just seeing things. I talked to my dad about it a few years ago in passing and he said that was very likely a mountain lion. Freaky! One of my earliest memories of living in Georgia was being herded into the school basement for our first ever tornado warning. We had our own little shelter beneath the basement stairs in our house. My dad kept his hunting rifles and later his Y2K food stock in there. We made use of it quite frequently. The shelter, not the food.

We always had ice tea in the fridge. Our freezer would sometimes be filled with meat from when my dad went hunting. We had a big beautiful John Deere until my dad accidentally drove it into a tree in our backyard and broke his ankle. Our house had some really pretty bay windows and my mom made lace curtains for the ones in the kitchen. I think it may have been haunted. We would hear footsteps in the crawlspace at night and see shadows move down the halls where there were no windows.
Our burglar alarm would go off for no reason every few years.
Sometimes I would even hear someone run up and down the stairs.

We took a lot of cartrips when I was younger. We would go to Shelby, North Carolina every year for the big ham fest. My mom and I would wander the swap meet. At least once a year we would go to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. We always had a lot of fun there. When I got older we started doing bigger trips to farther places but when I was little, we stuck to the South. The biggest deal was Disney World.

On weekends, my dad would often take us down to the Chattahoochee. We would sit by the water and feed the ducks. Sometimes they would try to sit on my dad. At least once every couple weeks we would go to my dad's fave shooting range so he could shoot skeet. The owners had a cat there but they would usually put her away when we'd come over because my mom didn't like cats. The manager was a good friend of my dad's and while they were shooting I would get stuffed with taffy and pink lemonade. Sometimes we would even go all the way to Augusta for his shooting (I told Charles and Dave of Lady A this and they got a kick out of it). When I was a teen, my dad got a fishing boat and weekends usually consisted of bass fishing at the lake (up at 5AM grrr) and then frying it up at his friend's house. When we had company we would usually take a trip up to Helen, Georgia and wander the German town and visit the Tanger Outlets.

When I was close to middle school age, they built our big mall. Before North Point, the other malls were like 30-45 minutes away so we rarely went shopping. This mall was a huge deal but even then, we didn't go too much. The biggest draw for me was the carousel. When I was older and home-schooled, my favorite thing about our large shopping area was the JoAnn's Fabrics. I would go in every weekend and buy fabric to make dresses because I loved to sew.

I put together a Pinterest board here in case you want to see what my childhood looked like. :-)

Atlanta Day 3- Coca Cola & the Sun Dial

Wow, am I just realizing I never posted this???

For our third and final day in Atlanta, we slept in. We needed to!

Our first stop was World of Coca Cola. I have been here so many times and though they keep changing the set-up, it's always essentially the same. We skipped the films and walked through each exhibit before hitting my favorite part- the tasting room. Having grown up coming to WCC, I know which sodas are awesome (Asian) and which ones taste rancid (Italy). My favorite one is definitely Smart Watermelon from China, but Inka Cola from Peru is also really awesome.

After this, we stopped by the CNN Center so Lara could hit the big Braves show. I found a lifesize Rick from Rick & Morty that was adorable.

Our last stop before getting our luggage was a last minute inclusion. Since we had skipped breakfast, we were starving. We made a reservation at the Sun Dial and that was probably one of the best choices we made. The food was amazing and our last views of Atlanta were beautiful.

Throwback Thursday

The time I went to the Las Vegas Ren fest and had a monkey sit on me.

Not really much to tell here; we have a small annual renaissance festival every year in Sunset Park around October. Funny thing about October, it can be insanely hot or really nice. This particular year it was hot. We did a whole round since it was not as crowded as usual, and I met this cute little girl who is attacking my head. Not really, she was quite well behaved. After having lived in Georgia and seeing their AMAZING and over the top ren fair a few times, ours is quite sad and a bit more like a themed festival. Still fun though. :-)

Break-Ups, Dating, Blogs

It's been a weird month.

After what I thought was the worst break-up ever, I realized, it was the best thing that's ever happened to me. Not only am I no longer attached to someone shady and dishonest, I have freedom to do whatever I want again. I don't have to subconsciously wonder how my decisions impact his life. I don't have to wonder if he's lying to me. I don't have to care at all. And it's amazing.

After a few weeks of feeling like I was run through a wood chipper, I woke up this week feeling almost blissfully happy every morning. I let myself be the unstable ex last week and stalked his Facebook and hers. And this week, I haven't bothered. I just don't even care. Why waste time and energy on someone who broke every promise, took things for granted, and in the end was never going to deserve me anyway?

I also realized that I have amazing girlfriends.
How could a girl ever get through anything without amazing girlfriends?

On that note, I'm dating. I have never really dated before. It's been extremely interesting. I've met some great guys, some weird guys, some guys who were nice but just not for me. And of course some creeps.

That said, when guys are asking about me, I always think of my blog. I realized, I'm very protective of it. Yeah, it's public and I have followers I've never met. But at the same time, I think I want to keep it to myself. I don't even tell a lot of friends or family about it.

So here are some great things about my break-up:

I don't have someone quizzing me about music I don't care for.
I don't have to force myself to like things I know I won't like.
I don't have someone making fun of everything I like.
Guys buy me dinner again. YES. I don't mind splitting the bill, but I don't have to pay the whole thing!
Someone tells me I'm pretty every single day.
If I want someone to talk to at any hour of the day, there's someone waiting for me.
I don't have to wonder why (not if) someone is lying to me.
There are no promises to break.
I can save the money I would have spent going to Pensacola and sign up for pilates again!
I can find someone who will really take care of me and let me take care of them.

So anyway, that is life lately. Hope you are all doing awesome!!!

Travel Tips- the Good, the Bad, and the Stupid

I travel a lot. That's no secret. I don't think I'm any kind of expert and I'm constantly looking for new tips and tricks to make things easier/faster/cheaper. It's a work in progress!

Here is an assortment of tips I've come up with, tips I've heard, and things I just think are stupid.

I usually book with Expedia. A number of rewards companies have Expedia portals so you can earn points for them AND earn Expedia points. They do all kinds of promotions, especially if you book on the app. The majority of the points you earn will be for packages or hotels, flights earn very few BUT you still get your points with the airline too. I've booked at least one swanky hotel stay with points and paid next to nothing.

Stuff things in your shoes- I agree but to an extent. Like, don't put your cosmetics in your shoes. And if you put stuff in your shoes, put them in a bag inside your shoes. Who wants all their stuff smelling like the inside of a shoe???

You never know if you're going to end up at a rodeo- A former friend said this to me once and I wanted to bash my head against a wall. This was an excuse for OVER packing. Um, if you didn't buy a ticket to the rodeo, you probably aren't going. And cowboy boots take up a lot of room. Pack for what you're doing not every eventuality. Cuz then you can't buy anything. No joke, when this girl had her luggage weighed at the counter, the attendant said "you're at your limit, you literally can't put anything else in, no shopping".

Don't pack a million of one item. I'm mostly saying this to myself as I remind myself I do not need FIVE BLACK EYELINERS. I'm going to go with two. Just two. JUST TWO.

Contact lens cases are great for holding fake lashes. They don't crush them.

Don't under-pack and not bring extra pants. The one time I did this I was caught in a monsoon, and sat in my only pair of pants in a foot of flood water. They weren't dry the next day so I walked around town in damp pants. The grossest feeling ever.

Don't eat at Denny's. Seriously, you are in a new fantastic place. Why eat the same stuff you eat at home and pay MORE since you're in a tourist destination? WHY???

Take advantage of Groupon, Living Social, and Travel Zoo. So many discounts.

Test out any new beauty routine at home first. I did a test run with my new palettes to make sure I could get ready in under ten minutes.

Cute make-up cases are great for your clean underwear. Just saying.

Got any great tips for me? I'm always on the lookout!

A Few Things About Your Bridal Consultant

I sold wedding gowns for two years.
During that time I "sold dreams", dealt with crazy bridezillas and even crazier wedding parties, and learned way more than I ever needed to know about bridal undergarments. I've seen all kinds of brides and even had repeat business (which was a bit odd).

If you're getting married, here are a few things to know about your bridal consultant:

We don't want you to look fat or ugly. We really don't. Well, not most of us. We will usually do everything we can to avoid having you pick the dress that makes you look hideous.

Unless it's Kleinfeld's or somewhere super upscale, we don't make a lot of money. If we make hourly, it's very little and having someone come in to play dress up or take up six hours of our time when they're not serious or are planning to buy elsewhere is not cool.

If you're not serious or are planning to buy at a sister store, that counts AGAINST us on our numbers. Our percentage of sales include the brides that come in and aren't buying from us. So if you're not sure what you're doing or don't plan to buy at the store, maybe be nice and tell a manager that you don't want it counting against their consultants and see if they can help you instead.

No it's not a bad thing if you don't cry. Only a few of my brides cried when they found their gown. But that doesn't mean they loved it more than the ones who didn't.

We have nice ways of steering you towards things that look better. We really do want you to look better. And we know your size better than you think. But if you really insist on seeing the 2, we will bring it over. Just know that when it doesn't fit right, we did warn you.

And here are just a few tips if you're looking at gowns for the first time:

Don't bring your whole entourage the first time. You don't need that many opinions at once. The brides who were most happy were the ones who came in that first time alone and looked at what THEY wanted. After all, it's YOUR gown.

We do like it when you bring pictures. But don't expect to see all the designer gowns if you're shopping at David's or Alfred Angelo. Research which gowns the stores actually carry in advance.

Don't try on too many that first time. What we suggest is starting with one of each style. If you try on a ballgown and hate the way it looks, then you know not to try anymore ballgowns. So much easier!

With alterations, ordering a gown can take eight months. Don't wander in three months before and expect a lot of customization. You'll likely end up with something straight off the rack and/or rush fees.

You're probably going to need alterations. There aren't a whole lot of ways around it. And the loop under the train is not for you to hold, it's for hanging the gown. If you hold it then the inside and underside of the back of your gown is showing. That looks pretty awful in pictures.

And now for the number one thing not to do:

This should be a no-brainer but do NOT try to return the gown after you wore it! Yes this has happened. Not that I think any of my fabulous readers would ever do such a thing.

My Weirdest Jobs

I'm not a serial worker.

I haven't had a million jobs... yet. I think I've only had about seven. Even so, while some were pretty run of the mill (waiting tables, cashiering, etc), some were a bit more... interesting.

Star Lounge
Probably my fave work experience ever (not really a job more like temporary event internship work). Back in 2007, the MTV Video Music Awards came to Vegas and along with it brought their slew of pre-show and post-show events, gifting suites, and craziness. I'd been e-mailed a volunteer internship opportunity from UNLV and interviewed for a spot and was super happy when I got it. I spent the weekend working at the Star Lounge, the gifting suite at the Hard Rock that was working in conjunction with Rolling Stone Magazine. We got to set up the booths, escort A-list stars around the event, and basically just make sure the stars felt comfortable. I met some pretty cool people and surprisingly, nobody was a total diva or even particularly stuck-up at all. I hung out with one of the guys from a CSI show (who gave me his number), Snoop Dogs' managers entourage asked me to do shots with them, and Lil Mama introduced me to her whole family. At the end of the event, one of the girls I was working with gave me an extra wristband for the Rolling Stone 40th Anniversary party where Kanye West was playing. Pretty interesting weekend!

Beacher's Madhouse
I lasted one day. I got paired with this company for my UNLV externship and this was not what I expected (nor was it what the advisor expected) or what I would feel was a good match for me. The company was (at the time) operating out of an apartment complex behind the casinos (which my parents and I thought was super creepy). Rather than take me on as a student and allow this to be a learning experience, I felt like I was free labor for them. I worked the check-in table for the auditions and saw all kinds of weird things. If you're at all familiar with this production, I'm sure you know what I mean. At this point in life, I'm fairly open-minded but for a girl who wasn't old enough to drink and was doing a full course load, this was just way too much... Especially to NOT be getting paid for it.

Halloween Store
This was one of the most exhausting jobs but it was still pretty cool. The people I worked for were really nice to me and very chill with overtime. I got paid just a bit more than minimum wage and worked somewhere around 50 hours a week at times. It was a temporary seasonal job where I got to wear jeans and do crazy things with my hair and make-up. I didn't have to cover my tattoos at all. My uniform was a bright orange T-shirt that said "Get Naked" on the front and "so we can dress you up" on the back. I basically oversaw the children's portion of the store which meant I could organize things the way I wanted, request the coworkers I wanted, and play the music I wanted. I loved my supervisor and I made one of my really good friends there. That's also where I learned to never date coworkers.

What's the weirdest job you've ever had? I'd love to hear all about it!!!

Atlanta Day 2- Tattoos and The Walking Dead...

Our second day started with us getting a rental car.

Lara and had planned to get a tattoo over at Skinwerks, a shop in Carrollton, Georgia. The owner had been on a recent season of Ink Masters and Lara really liked his work. Since we were making the trek out, and I had been wanting another Georgia themed piece, I decided to get one too. It really was well worth the drive. The piece that Lara got from Craig and the tattoo I got from Michel are both amazing! I just wish Skinwerks was closer to Vegas but of course if it was, I'd be getting a lot more and that might not be the best idea. If you're in Georgia and want a tattoo done, go there! I'm planning to make another stop on my next trip home.

We drove around for a bit and passed through Senoia which is home to Woodbury from the Walking Dead and appears to be home to some other filming for the next season. We saw a lot of random sets, no trespassing signs, and a large wall being built. Pretty cool! I loved Senoia so much, I'm coming back soon just to explore this adorable little town.

After this, we headed back towards Atlanta for a last stop at Terminus. We tried to take as many photos as we could without actually breaking any laws and the A train car was visible from the road so we spotted it right away. Way too exciting!

Once we dropped off the car we met up with one of my oldest friends, Christine, over at the Varsity. The Varsity food is not fantastic but it is a serious Atlanta institution and just one of those places you need to go to (kind of like how you have to take people to Waffle House so they can have gone).

After a meal of chili cheese everything and a peach pie, Lara and I headed back to the hotel. We weren't tired and knew we'd get hungry again so we stopped by a hotel store for some snacks (King of Pops popsicles, peach ice cream, mac and cheese) and some drinks and settled for the night with Neighbors on Pay Per View. Pretty great day and a good time to rest up our sore limbs. lol

Atlanta Day 1- Chicken and waffles, Braves, Weezer

I'm home from Atlanta and what a fun time!
So awesome in fact, that I already booked my next trip back home.

After one of the worst redeye flights I've EVER been on, we made it to Atlanta at about 6:30AM. We dropped our luggage off at the hotel first and then headed straight for Sublime Doughnuts. I'd never used MARTA much when I lived here but when playing tourist, it is a Godsend. It got us everywhere. And it was cheeeeeap. So cheap. Plus, our hotel connected to Peachtree Center with the MARTA station right downstairs so it was also really convenient.

Sublime Doughnuts was adorable and the doughnuts were amazing. It was funny, Lara and I ordered ice cream coffees and the staff bent the rules for us even though they don't usually serve the ice cream until after 10AM (we laughed because in Vegas, you can get hard liquor 24/7). We must really have looked like corpses. We got four different pieces and split them all. Unfortunately I was facing the screen with flashing flavours and kept wanting to get more. Next time. I will do it next time.

Our next stop was Piedmont Park. I know some of the best Atlanta skyline photos are shot from here and I'd never walked through so we thought it would be a chill way to spend the morning in between meals. No wonder people like it so much, the park is just gorgeous.

After walking off the doughnuts, we headed to Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles. OMG. Considering the best we have in Vegas is driving four hours to Roscoe's in a crappy part of LA, this was a dream come true. We got the fried green tomatoes (so weird that I'd never tried them before) and split an order of the chicken and waffles. Everything was delicious.

From here we made our way over to Turner Field for our tour. Apparently there was nobody else booked for our tour so we ended up with a private walking tour of the stadium! Even better, Weezer was doing their soundcheck so we got to watch from various parts of the seats and the field.

We checked into the hotel with plenty of time to change and relax a bit before the game. We were super excited about the game food. We got steak sandwiches at Kevin Rathbun and ice cream at Mayfield. Our tickets were $40 and included the game, the show, and a T-shirt. While the Braves lost and the Weezer concert wasn't well organized by Turner Field, we still had a really awesome time! Great first day in Atlanta.

Throwback Thursday

That time I went to a party in the bowling alley suite at Hard Rock and it was awesome.

I don't even remember how I found out about this party or how I got to it. And no, I wasn't drinking. I love Sailor Jerry tattoo culture, I like rum, and I have been dying to see this suite since I saw it on The OC. It did not disappoint. There was an awesome band, an open bar, a photo booth, and yes, the bowling alley!!!

Pre Vacation Beauty

You guys know how rarely I post about beauty products.

I love my beauty products. I really do. But I don't pretend to be an expert on anything.

That said, before any trip, I always love to play around with whatever new products I got for the trip. You know, so I don't end up looking like a clown in all my vacation photos. :-)

I've been a huge fan of Benefit's They're Real mascara for a while. With my sad stubby Asian lashes, this is one of the only mascaras that has ever been able to give them much lift or length. When the new liner and eye make-up remover came out, I had to try them. While the liner takes some getting used to with the applicator, the remover is AMAZING. It really does clean everything up.

I picked up the new Naked Flushed Streak blush palette and Naked 3 eyeshadow palette for the summer. I got some pretty good deals online so it wasn't TOO much of a splurge. I'm loving the rose gold tones for my nude summer looks.

My current fave facial product is Anna Natural's Glowing Mama scrub. It's a nice vegan scrub that smells AMAZING and really makes the skin feel soft and fresh. In fact, I'm a little scared to use anything harsh on it now because the skin feels so nice and new.

Two weeks before the trip I always start with the gradual sunless tanner about twice a day mixed with my regular moisturizers. I use a little extra on my face to contour my jaw and cheekbones too. Since it evens out the skin tone, I don't have to pack any heavy foundations! Just lots of sunblock. :-)

What are your fave pre-trip beauty rituals?

My ATL Bucket List & Budget

As you may have figured by now, my next adventure is:

ATLANTA

I am so excited about this trip. I haven't been back home since 2012.
I have some really great friends still living in Georgia that I am really excited to see and this time I get to play tourist with a real actual brand new ATL tourist! Yay!!!

I've also enlisted one of my fave bloggers, Ashleigh, to do an Atlanta related guest post.
I can't wait to read it!

It's a short trip but here is our trip bucket list:

1. Braves game. I have only once been to a game at Turner Field. My first Braves game (and I'm a legit Georgian here) was at Fulton County Stadium. I was there the day they imploded it. So sad. :-(

2. Tattoos. Lara and I are both tattoo nuts. I've been wanting another Georgia tattoo and what better place to do it than my home state? Besides, they'll be able to get the red dirt colors just right here.

3. Walking Dead Road Trip. Since we have to get a rental car, we're hitting up a few of the Walking Dead filming locations. Including Woodbury that's apparently really safe. And Terminus of course, since they provide sanctuary to all.

4. CNN Center Tour. I've never done it. How weird is that?

5. The basics. I'll be showing her the Coke Museum (I only ever called it that, never World of Coca Cola) and Centennial Park (to see my beloved bricks).

I'm really excited about how little this trip is costing me in terms of setting aside money from my actual paycheck. We got a really great package deal for a redeye flight on Delta (the only way I will fly to ATL) and a wonderful hotel right in the Midtown area, so that portion that I did set aside was already less than expected. With the exception of my new tattoo and one dinner, virtually all of the anticipated expenses of the trip is being paid for with random assorted rewards- Cash Crate, Swag Bucks, Lucky Rewards, my credit card rewards, commissions from a referral program I do at work, and of course, my Duck Dynasty piggy bank. Total, I had almost $250 worth of random money that I didn't have to set aside. Pretty cool, right?

Throwback Thursday

That time I did a pub crawl with a group of peeps dressed as super heroes.

The Drinking League!!!

This was my first ever Yelp event. I had been Yelping a while and when I saw the words super hero I had to go. It was also the perfect time to debut my Wonder Woman shirt. Right???

The pub crawl was awesome and everyone was dressed up; even if just with a cape or a mask. If you wanna see more photos from this awesome event (including a lot of pics of Spider Man), check out this link! These photos are hilarious!!!

Lisa's Bachelorette

So I spent a good portion of my weekend helping set-up, shop, bake for Lisa's bachelorette party. We had a fun night out at Chippendales and there's something smugly fun about being a comped guest in the producer's reserved seats. Silly I know, but VIP treatment is always a smug yet satisfying thing. It was nice to see some of the guys; since most of my friends with the company left for Men of the Strip, I don't see much of the guys who are left anymore.

What do you guys think of the sash? I made it for the bride myself. :-)

Oh, along with the bra and thong cookies below. :-)
